Convenience is Innovation

Convenience is one of the most powerful forms of innovation.

Specifically when designing software.

The fewer choices the user is forced to make, the shorter their journey toward the expected result.

For example, by combining functions into a single app (say email and calendaring), the user experience is improved because mental energy outputs are reduced.

Fewer clicks are required to access functions which means the task of emailing a friend and scheduling lunch is easier and it quickly becomes a routine process of clicks, hence reduced energy.

Further, while the user may not experience positive emotions (consciously) they most likely won’t experience negative emotions.

Few users appreciate the nuance of interface design – they can’t call out why they like it, it just works.

In this case, reducing negative emotions is a worthy goal.
